Trojan Brew 4/14: Springing into action

Ace in the hole, weekend previews, and much more!

Good morning! To say there’s some action around USC this weekend would be an understatement. Pick your poison—because there is sure to be something for every USC fan out there to enjoy this fine spring weekend.

What all can you find in today's Brew?

⛳ Pair of Trojans finish in top-20

🔼 Aces In The Hole. The 76th Western Intercollegiate wrapped up at Pasatiempo Golf Club, and USC men’s golf finished with not one but two players inside the top-20 once the tournament was all said and done.

Mahanth Cirravuri finished in a tie for 19th at +3 to end the tournament with scores of 72, 70, and 71. It was the freshman’s team-best seventh finish inside the top-24 this year and his third in the top-19.

As for sophomore Jackson Rivera, going out in style seems to be… well… his style. On the second to last hole of the day, Rivera teed up on the par 3, 188 yard hole, and used the slopes to sink the ball right into the bottom of the cup. Rivera used his ace to finish in a tie for 19th with teammate Mahanth Cirravuri at +3 for the tournament.

The Trojans finished 11th overall as a team on the week as they now shift focus to the Pac-12 Championships.

🔼 Win The Dam Game. USC baseball has gone an impressive 5-0 in the last week (plus a few days) including a hard-earned win against Cal State Fullerton to earn themselves a top-25 ranking. This weekend, the Trojans head to Corvallis, Oregon to take on the Beavers in a meaningful Pac-12 matchup.

Two wins separate the third best Trojans and the seventh place Beavers in the Pac-12 standings, but each team comes into the series with 21 wins a piece.

💥 Austin Overn, the talented two-sport athlete, and Cole Gabrielson come in looking to keep the bats hot with a combined .342 batting average on 85 hits this season.

💪 Ace Tyler Stromsborg enters the series 4-1 on the season with an impressive 45 strikeouts and allowing just .227 batting average to opposing teams. To close out games, Garrett Clarke has been solid with an ERA of 1.35 and five saves on the season.

The Trojans begin their battle with Oregon State tonight at 7:00 pm. Watch the action on the Pac-12 Network, or follow along through live stats on USCTrojans.com.

🔼 Keeping Up With The Jones. Track & field graduate student Allie Jones found herself atop the USC record books after posting a school record 6,217 points in the Women’s Heptathlon Elite competition at the Mt. SAC Relays.

Jones set three event personal records including a 13.10 second 100m hurdles, 1.74m leap in the high jump, and 13.06m throw in the shot put. She ended the first day of competition 23 points clear of the field.

Day 2 was more of the same as Jones finished first in the 200m dash, long jump, and 800m run en route to her first place finish among all competitors in the Women’s Heptathlon.

🔼 Weekend Previews. Like we said, there’s quite a bit of action heading into this weekend in the world of Trojan sports, so let’s take a minute to take a quick dive into everything, shall we?

🤽‍♀️ Water Polo: the number one water polo team in the country suits up this weekend for the final two home games of the season. 3x MPSF Player of the Week Bayley Weber leads the team with 21 goals this season and looks to add to that total this weekend.

🥍 Lacrosse: The Trojans are in the drivers seat. If they win out this weekend in their two road games, the Women of Troy will win the Pac-12 title outright. After allowing just 11 goals in their past two games, senior Danielle Carson and 2x Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week Emma Wightman look to continue their success and bring the title home to Southern California.

🏖 Beach Volleyball: The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team heads to San Luis Obispo this weekend to take on the Center of Effort Challenge. The team comes in with an 11-dual win streak and are 8-0 all-time in SLO. Their next win will be a nation-best 300th all-time victory and will likely bump USC up to that coveted number one spot.

🤔 TROJAN TRIVIA

Heisman House. Caleb Williams joined the elite group of quarterbacks to hoist the Heisman trophy in 2022, and will look to become the first person in USC history to win the award in back-to-back years.

Can you name each of the USC Heisman quarterback winners that came before him?

Think you got it? Scroll on down to the bottom of this email for the answer!

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

It’s spring, which means it’s time to gear up for football season.

The Trojans will take the field this Saturday at 12:00 pm PT to suit up and show the fans what they might can expect out of the squad once football season rolls around. Lincoln Riley and the rest of the staff, including new hire Kliff Kingsbury, will give the fans a glimpse of the new-look Trojans for free, just reserve your tickets here.

Oh, and did we mention our Heisman winning quarterback is going to be there. Caleb Williams is coming back to finish what he came here to do: win a championship. USC is honoring Williams with a special Heisman ceremony prior to kick off.

Much like last year, the game will open with a 21-0 lead for the defense. They will earn points for each turnover, fourth down stop, missed field goal, safety, and of course, touchdown. The offense will score the same as it always is, touchdowns and field goals only.

It should be an interesting and fun competition to see the Trojans build on the work they did last year, and hopefully, capitalize on the talent around them for a competitive fall.
