The Three Torches 10/25: If the Crown Fits

Today, many Trojan student-athletes are awarded

Good morning! There were many highlights from USC volleyball’s two comeback wins last weekend against Washington and Washington State, but for now, here’s one featuring one of many blocks by Tyrah Ariail.

What all can you find in today's edition of The Three Torches?

🔼 Park’s Place. Coming off her first collegiate win at the Stanford Intercollegiate, Catherine Park earned Pac-12 Golfer of the Week honors. Park shot under par all three days and shot in the 60s each round, a first for Trojan women’s golf since 2022. As a team, Park helped the Women of Troy capture its second title of the season.

Park and the rest of USC women’s golf will head to Atlanta, GA, next week to compete in the East Lake Cup in the team’s last action of the fall season.

🔼 Answering the Call. This weekend, USC women’s volleyball will answer the call of the Rocky Mountains as the team will travel to Colorado and Utah this weekend for a pair of Pac-12 conference matches. So far this season, the Trojans are 7-3 in conference play and sit in a tie for third in the Pac-12 standings.

🔼 Charney Runs the Southwest. After a back-and-forth championship match in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, Emma Charney came away with the hardware. Charney finished as the tournament’s singles champion after defeating the No. 2 seed in three sets.

🔼 Season Outlook. Since earning their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2014, head coach Lindsay Gottlieb and the rest of USC women’s basketball have had their expectations raised. The staff worked hard in the offseason to recruit new talent and build up the roster to compete in one of the harder conferences in college basketball.

🗣️ "Our culture is really strong. I know people throw that word around a lot, but coming into practice every day, they raise the bar. They're fun to be around. They're really about winning. They're about one another." - Lindsay Gottlieb

Sixty Thrice. Catherine Park is coming off an incredible tournament where she shot in the 60s all three days, but she isn’t the only one on the team to have achieved the rare feat.

⚔️ ONE TWO BIG THINGS

As if Trojan men’s hoops fans didn’t already know, USC men’s basketball has a couple of stars heading into the season with some high praise.

Boogie Ellis was recognized as one of the nation’s best shooting guards after being placed on the 2024 Jerry West Watch List. The Logo’s award places 20 players on the list to start the season. Ellis was named to the 2022-23 Pac-12 First Team after averaging 17.7 points per game last season.

Isaiah Collier, the nation’s top freshman heading into the 2023-24 season, was named to the Bob Cousy Award Watch List, an award that honors the top point guard in college basketball. The former MaxPreps and Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year heads into his first year with the Trojans after averaging 19.6/6.8/5.5 per game.

Each of these student-athletes will play big roles to the Trojan men’s basketball team’s success this season that is getting ready to tipoff in a couple of short weeks.
