The Three Torches 11/3: All Out Battle

Today, a preview of what's to come this weekend for Trojan Athletics

Good morning! Not to get too far ahead of things, but the Trojans now know what’s in store after the release of the 2024 Big Ten Conference football schedule. USC will host four home games against its newest foes including Wisconsin, Penn State, Rutgers and Nebraska.

What all can you find in today's Brew?

🏈 A Big One
⚽️ Crosstown Showdown
⚔️ And much, much more!

🔼 Crosstown Showdown. Tonight, the Women of Troy will face off against their crosstown rivals in what will be one of the tougher tests the team has had to face this season. USC soccer comes into the match No. 22 in the nation while the other team from Los Angeles comes in ranked second.

While the matchup between the two has been a historic struggle for the Trojans, the team will look to harness the energy from the most recent match against the rivals after defeating them 2-0 almost a year ago to the day.

🔼 Battle for Bronze. After falling in the first match of the East Lake Cup, USC women’s golf bounced back and earned themselves a bronze medal after besting Texas A&M in the consolation match. The Women of Troy took the match 3-2 with wins coming from Amari Avery, Brianna Navarrosa.

🔼 Replay in the Pool. This weekend, Trojan men’s water polo will face off against Stanford, looking to avenge the loss from earlier in the season. Before the game, USC will honor its 1998 NCAA Championship team to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the program’s first title.

The Trojans come into the matchup ranked No. 4 in the nation with Stanford just one ranking above them. The team is riding in with momentum from last week’s key victory against Long Beach State, and will look to do more of the same against the Cardinal on Saturday afternoon.

🔼 Reading Up. With the basketball season now so close you can almost hear the Galen Center rocking, it’s time to get familiar with the Trojan basketball teams (if you haven’t already). Check out the 2023-24 USC Basketball Yearbook featuring this year’s men’s and women’s hoops teams.

🔼 Fresh Man. With the year wide receiver and return specialist Zachariah Branch has had this year, it’s no surprise that he finds himself as one of the semifinalists for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award. The award will be given to the nation’s most outstanding freshman player in all of college football.

This season, Branch has accumulated two return touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns for the Trojans. He became the first player since 2016 to return both a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown, as well as record a receiving score.

🔼 Desert Dive. Both the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams will be in action this weekend as they take on a pair of matchups in the desert against two Arizona schools. First up, the Trojans will take on Arizona in 16 different events, some of which include the 1-Meter Dive, 200 Freestyle Relay and 200 Individual Medley. Then on Saturday, USC will get up and do some of the same against Arizona State.

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

In what will be a sold out LA Coliseum, Trojan football will take on No. 5 ranked Washington for its 100th Homecoming Weekend in school history. After grinding out a victory last weekend against California, USC will face one of its toughest tests of the season against the Huskies.

In the past, USC holds an all-time 51-30-4 record against Washington, but this season, the Huskies are coming into the matchup with an undefeated record. In what should be one of the best QB duals of the season, reigning Heisman winner Caleb Williams will go to work against Michael Penix Jr., a Heisman hopeful.
