The Three Torches 3/27: Top Honors

Today, Watkins selected as a finalist for two national awards and two Trojans earned MPSF weekly honors

Good morning! USC quarterback and projected No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, Caleb Williams, is all of us supporting the Women of Troy and their march in the NCAA Tournament.

What else can you find in today's edition of The Three Torches?

🔼 Top Honors. The Women of Troy standout freshman is now one of four finalists in line for awards going to the top collegiate women’s basketball player in the nation. JuJu Watkins was selected as a finalist for the Wade Trophy and the Naismith Trophy, both of which have only been given to three Trojans in the history of the program. Watkins has set USC single-season scoring record during the Trojans' NCAA Tournament run, and she now holds 861 points in her freshman campaign.

🔼 Leaping Success. Senior jumper Temi Ojora was named the Pac-12 Women's Field Athlete of the Week following her nation-leading triple jump at the Ron & Sharlene Allice Trojan Invitational. Ojora won the women's triple jump competition with an NCAA-leading jump of 44-11.75/13.71m. She currently leads all NCAA women's triple jumpers by two or more feet. Ojora finished the meet with three jumps of over 44 feet.

🔼 All Around Win. The Trojans used a six-run sixth inning to propel themselves to a 10-1 victory over Fresno State. Going into the sixth all tied at one, USC used a bases-clearing triple from Ethan Hedges to bring in three runs followed by RBI singles and some fielding errors from the Bulldogs. Austin Overn added to the lead with another triple to score two runs for good measure. The Trojans, led by starter Garren Rizzo, used four pitchers to combine for one run and six hits to hold the opponent to one run on the night.

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

Both instrumental in the Women of Troy’s win over No. 2 California, Carolyne Stern and Ava Stryker secured their first honors of the season, with Stern selected as MPSF Player of the Week and Stryker as MPSF Newcomer of the Week. USC women's water polo has swept the MPSF weekly awards after the Trojans captured the key win over the Golden Bears.

Stern earned her fifth double-digit save outing of the season and helped USC improve to 14-4 overall with a 1-0 mark in MPSF competition. Stryker now leads USC in scoring with 37 goals following her recent hat trick and has now scored at least one goal in USC's last 12 games.
