The Three Torches 8/23: New Era

Three More, New Head Honcho, and much more!

Good morning! Question for you this morning: who would you like to see run out of the tunnel with USC football this Saturday? We have a couple of people in mind that have done a great job in the past.

What all can you find in today's Brew?

🏈 Three More
✌️ New Head Honcho
⚔️ And much, much more!

🔼 Three More. College football season is upon us, and with only three more sleeps until one of USC’s most anticipated seasons in recent memory is set to begin, we wanted to give out some quick, and very positive, stats before the Trojans take on San Jose State.

🏈 USC’s No. 6 ranking in the Preseason AP Poll is the highest since 2017.

🏈 The Trojans are 5-0 against SJSU all-time with each game having been played in the Coliseum.

🏈 USC is 34-1-1 against teams from the Mountain West Conference.

🔼 Officially Family. The Trojan women’s basketball family grew quite a bit this offseason, but now with the start of the fall semester upon us, the newcomers have their names (and numbers) ready for the upcoming season.

🔼 Making It Look Easy. The trojans have gone out to the 2023 World Athletics Championships and shown out on one of the sports’ biggest stages.

👟 Nia Ali, the reigning U.S. national champion, advanced in the 100m hurdles after finishing first in her heat.

👟 Anna Cockrell is cherishing all the moments this championship has to offer after making the 400m hurdle finals.

🔼 Tough Test. The Women of Troy are hitting the road this week with a pair of top-5 matchups headed their way. Tomorrow night, the Trojans will face off against No. 4 Duke for this first time since 2015. Then on Sunday night, USC will square up against No. 2 North Carolina where the Trojans will look to avenge a 2019 NCAA Quarterfinals loss, and was the last time these two teams saw each other.

🔼 Brick By Brick. Adding another big name to the Trojans’ men’s golf staff is new assistant coach Evan Emerick. Coach Emerick brings his 15 years of coaching experience from SDSU, and his wealth of knowledge of golf within southern California, to team up with USC’s new-look men’s golf program.

🗣️ “We are impressed with his high character and proven ability of developing players. He will provide strong leadership and serve as a great role model for our student-athletes.” - Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Paul Perrier.

🔼 Double Trouble. Two Trojans are starting off the season strong already after being named to the 2023 Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team earlier this week.

🏐 Skylar Fields, USC’s star outside hitter, led the Pac-12 in kills last year (598), kills per set (5.11), points (650) and points per set (5.56). Easy to see why she made it this year.

🏐 Mia Tuaniga, the Trojans’ setter, is coming off a season that saw her finish sixth in school history with 58 aces in 2022.

Starting Off Strong. USC football has a knack for starting off strong, and with all the hype surrounding the 2023 Trojan football team, things should play out nicely.

Our question today — do you know how many season openers in a row the Trojans have won when playing in the Coliseum?
