The Three Torches 9/13: Shining Stars

Today, we take a look at the awards the Trojans racked up this week

Good morning! Disruptive is a great word for two things: start-up companies and the defensive unit in football. Good thing the Trojans can use that word to describe one of their strongest newcomers on the USC defense so far this season.

What all can you find in today's Brew?

⛳️ Weekly Award
🏈 First Time For Everything
⚔️ And much, much more!

🔼 Weekly Award. USC women’s volleyball has themselves a star in the making. Skylar Fields was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after sweeping the competition in the Trojan Invitational where she was also named the Most Outstanding Player.

She posted double-digit kills for the seventh time this season, and set a career high of 28 kills in a four set win over San Diego. Tomorrow, Fields and the rest of USC women’s volleyball will take part in the Boilermaker Challenge, the last tournament of the season before Pac-12 play begins.

🔼 Big Promo. Former Trojan baseball player Kyle Hurt is moving on up to the big leagues. Hurt, who has posted the highest strikeout rate in the minors this year (145 Ks in 88.1 innings), will suit up for the Los Angeles Dodgers as a member of the bullpen.

🔼 Top Golfer. USC women’s golfer Amari Avery was named as one of the 25 golfers on the ANNIKA Awards’ Fall Watch List to the surprise of absolutely no one.

Avery has been a staple of the Trojan golf team for the past couple of years, and was named as a finalist for the same award just last season. Her resumé is already one of the best in USC women’s golf history with

  • Four career wins (T-5th all-time)

  • 71.71 career stroke average (2nd all-time)

  • 21 rounds in the 60’s (T-3rd all-time)

Avery, and the rest of the Trojans, will tee it up for the first time this season in the Leadership and Golf Invitational next Monday.

🔼 In Living Color. On the latest episode of Trojans Live, defensive coordinator Alex Grinch stops by to discuss how he believes the season has gone thus far.

Plus, wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons, running back Marshawn Lloyd stop by to talk more USC football, and track star Alyssa Blockburger discusses the legacy of the Trojans’ track and field program.

Almost Fifty. USC football exploded onto the scene last Saturday with an offensive performance to remember, but it wasn’t the first time the Trojans have put up numbers like that.

Our question today — do you remember the last time USC football put up 49 points in a single half?

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

For the first time in his young Trojan career, Zachariah Branch was named the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in USC’s 56-10 victory over Stanford.

On Saturday, he scored his second return touchdown of the season, and his first punt return touchdown of his career. The speedster shifted his way down the field for a 75-yard score for the team’s fourth touchdown of the game. Branch also added four receptions for 30 yards and a rush for two yards on the night.

Next week, Branch will look to return another in the Trojans first road game of the season against Arizona State.

Answer: 1974!

The Trojans, in "The Comeback”, scored 49 points against Notre Dame in one half of football to, you guessed it, comeback and win the game.
