The Three Torches 9/18: Three, Two, One

Today, the numbers are in the favor of the Trojans

Good morning! USC football was resting up this past Saturday for their big Pac-12 matchup coming up, so here’s a stat that we think all Trojan fans are going to like. Hopefully this satisfies the thirst for football for the time being.

🔼 That Makes Five. The Trojans extended their win streak to five with an exciting four set win over Purdue at the Boilermaker Challenge. USC took the first set of the game in an intense 30-28 win, then proceeded to win the third and fourth sets to come away with the win.

Outside hitter Skylar Fields continued to impress with 27 kills on a .323 hitting percentage. Freshman London Wijay, one of the Trojans’ early enrollees, had more kills than she is years old in a solid effort to help the squad come out on top.

🔼 Repping SC. Former track and field Trojans keep on winning. Benjamin Rai competed in the 400m hurdles at the Prefontaine Classic and, of course, came away with a gold medal. TeeTee Terry put up a personal best time in the 100m in Eugene, OR with a time of 10.83.

🔼 Double Dubs. In their double-header on Saturday, No. 3 ranked USC men’s water polo left the waters of the Uytengsu Aquatics Center with a 2-0 record.

🤽‍♂️ Against No. 11 UC Santa Barbara, the Trojans put up 16 points behind Luka Brnetic’s career-high three goals, all in the first period, in a game that was never close. The final score ended 16-8 for the Trojan’s first victory of the game.

🤽‍♂️ The second match of the afternoon was an exhibition against Golden West where the Trojans mounted a comeback to steal the win. Twelve different Trojans were on the stat sheet with goals in a 13-8 victory.

USC moves to 6-1 on the season and will gear up for the MPSF Invitational next weekend.

🔼 Now On the Tee. USC women’s golf is teeing it up for the first time this season at the Leadership and Golf Invitational as the WGCA preseason No. 5 team in the country. The two-day event begins this morning with 18 teams in the field as the 2022 Pac-12 champs begin the road back to the NCAA Championships.

🌎 A BETTER CHOICE

For last weekend’s Zero Waste Game against Stanford, USC had a new cup partner in Better For All. These 100% biodegradable and compostable cups will be used in select hospitality areas for the football and basketball season.

Our question today — do you know how many kills Fields has so far this season?

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

I don’t even know what to say. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think this would be possible.” - Stewart Hagestad

The former Trojan said this after picking up his third U.S. Amateur victory. He joins the ranks of golf legends such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan as players to win three or more U.S. Amateur titles. With his win, Hagestad will be invited to the 2024 U.S. Open and likely, the 2024 Masters Tournament.
