Trojan Brew 4/21: Rivalry Week Hits Different

Seeking perfection, one big thing, and much more!

Good morning! We’ve got five chances this weekend to beat the Bruins which means it’s going to be a good weekend. We all know the Trojans own Los Angeles, but let’s just go ahead and prove that once again, shall we?

What all can you find in today's Brew?

🤩 Seeking perfection
⛳️ One BIG thing
⚔️ And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Seeking Perfection. After overtaking the number one spot in the nation after last week’s upset win, the Trojans are seeking an undefeated MPSF run. Last on the list of teams to knock out? Crosstown rival UCLA.

This Saturday, USC will take on the No. 3 Bruins at the Spieker Aquatics Center for a chance to close out the season as the number one water polo team in the nation. In their last matchup, the Trojans defeated UCLA in a close one, handing them just their fourth loss of the season.

Captains, All-Americans, and 2020 Olympians Paige Haushild and Tilly Kearns will look to finish the season in style with their combined 82 goals. The decorated pair are vying for their third national championship with the Trojans and a win this weekend would give them the momentum they need to perform in the NCAA tournament.

Tune in to see when (not if) the Trojans secure a victory this weekend on Pac-12 Networks on April 22nd at 12:00pm.

🔼 Broomsticks. Another match, another win for men’s tennis as they completed the season sweep of UCLA Wednesday evening defeating them 4-0. The scoreboard only says four, but the Trojans pulled off a complete sweep, coming out on top in all nine matches.

Doubles partners Learner Tien and Bradley Frye started things off hot with a win followed by another from Ryan Colby and Stefan Dostanic to secure the doubles point for the Trojans.

In the singles matches, it was more of the same with Tien earning his first singles win as an NCAA athlete and 31st ranked singles player Dostanic doing his thing to win easily in two sets. With the win, USC improved to 15-7 on the season and an undefeated 8-0 at home. The Trojans will play in one more match before getting ready for the Pac-12 Tournament next week.

🔼 Rivalry Week Hits Different. Conference play is in full swing this baseball season, and this weekend, the Trojans will play, you guessed it, UCLA. After a solid outing against CSUN earlier this week, USC comes into the bout 22-13-1, one win better than the opposing Bruins.

In quite the even matchup, the advantage goes to the cardinal and gold with an impressive 17-4 home record. The Trojans know how to protect the house. In even more positive news, USC grabbed two out of three in last season’s series which will hopefully translate into this season.

The Trojans aren’t the heaviest of hitters, but we know when to step up to the plate and put one out there. USC is out-hitting its opponents by 63 hits, and that discrepancy has turned close games into wins. Catch all of the weekend action out at the ballpark in person or on ESPN+, and don’t miss head coach Lincoln Riley’s first pitch in tonight’s game.

🔼 Upset Watch. If you haven’t caught on yet, it’s UCLA week, and the women’s tennis team will square up against the Bruins today for their penultimate match of the season.

The Trojans come into the match today winning two of their last three including a sweep in their latest appearance down in Eugene. Last week, no. 7 singles player Mady Sieg and Emma Charney had themselves a day winning both their singles and doubles matchups to secure the win.

Today, the women of Troy will look to do more of the same. Lead by Sieg’s 15 match win streak and Eryn Cayetano’s 22 total wins, the Trojans will lean on their stars to try and upset the 19th ranked Bruins. Follow all the live action here to see if USC can get the job done.

🤔 TROJAN TRIVIA

Ranking the Trojans. The spring game was counted as a success by all parties last weekend, and it seems that ESPN took notice to it as well. Their latest FPI rankings came out earlier this week placing the Trojans within the top-25 for the second year in a row.

Our question today—do you know what rank the Trojans are heading into the 2023-2024 football season?

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

Hey Siri, play ‘We Are the Champions' by Queen.

The No. 15 women’s golf team in the nation just captured their eighth Pac-12 championship after a dominant third round showing. The Trojans won at a combined 15-under par, seven strokes ahead of second place.

Christine Wang, Amari Avery, and Malia Nam all fired scores under par in the tournament’s last day at Papago G.C., but the celebration won’t last for long. “We’re going to enjoy this but also quickly turn our attention to the upcoming NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships.” Spoken like true champions.
