🔼 Double Trouble. What a run its been for our women’s tennis squad so far this NCAA Championship tournament. USC is now representing the Pac-12 as the only school to have both singles and doubles participants still remaining in a race for an NCAA title.

Freshman Maddy Sieg has been on fire, and has been representing the Trojans for much of the tournament. In the singles bracket, she defeated her opponent in three sets to secure a spot in the semi-finals. In the doubles bracket, alongside Eryn Cayetano, the Trojans battled another three-set duel and came out on top yet again. With both matchups secured, Sieg and Cayetano will play out their matches in a chance for an NCAA title later today.

🔼 Wrapping It Up. In the Trojans second game of pool play on Thursday afternoon, USC came up just short in a valiant effort against Washington. The final score of 8-3 was not a solid indication of how close this game was, as UW scored four of its runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game away.

Johnny Olmstead was a solid contributor with a pair of RBI’s on the day, and Cole Gabrielson had a stellar performance going 2-3 at the plate with a walk. Although the Pac-12 title is out of the question, the Trojans still have a strong case for an at-large bid in this year’s NCAA Tournament. USC will find out on May 29th to see if they did enough to earn a spot.

🔼 Closing Time. The USC men’s tennis season came to a close on Wednesday as star duo Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye fell short in NCAA doubles play. In their final match together in the Round of 32, the Trojans fought back after dropping the first set, but were unable to make a comeback.

When all was said and done, USC finished 10th in the final ITA rankings of the season with an overall record of 21-8. This team, and this Al-American duo, is one that we won’t soon forget.

🔼 Right Place, Wight Time. USC lacrosse grad transfer Emma Wightman has earned herself yet another award, and this one is quite the honor. Wightman was named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-America Third Team.

She becomes just the seventh USC student-athlete to earn a spot on the All-American list. The Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year helped the Women of Troy achieve a 16-4 record, as well as a regular season Pac-12 title for just the third time in program history. What a career it has been for Wightman, as she will go down as one of the most decorated Trojans in the program.

🔼 Off To The Races. USC is putting in work on the track, and field, in their NCAA Regional, and have had two of its student-athletes qualify for the Outdoor Championships later this year.

  • Nikolaos Polychroniou began his regional play by placing third in the hammer throw with a mark of 71.34 meters, goo enough to earn his way to the NCAA Championships.

  • JC Stevenson will also make his way to the Outdoor Championships in the long jump after finishing 10th on the day with a jump of 7.66 meters.

  • 13 additional Trojans qualified for the next round of their events where they will again have to score high enough to move on to the championships. Among them are Jalaysiya Smith who advanced in the 100-meter hurdles after running the 8th fastest race in USC history with a time of 12.88.

Action continues today where more of the athletes will look to punch their tickets to Austin, TX, the site of the NCAA National Championships.

⚔️ ONE BIG THING

The Trojans ended their amazing NCAA Championship run with a second place finish on Wednesday at Grayhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale, AZ. It was the sixth time in program history USC has finished as runners-up, and the first time since 2014.

In the championship match against Wake Forest, Catherine Park, who had an incredible showing at this year’s tournament, captured the sole point in the Championship match, defeating her opponent 3&1. The rest of the Trojans were unable to secure another point.

Their incredible run to the title match included:

  • A fourth place finish in team stroke play

  • Defeating No. 4 South Carolina in the quarterfinals

  • Knocking off top-ranked Stanford in the semifinals

A successful season for the Trojans saw them come up just short, but we know that next year, this team will be looking for a rematch for a chance to earn a title for the first time since 2014. Fight On!

Answer: One!

Maddy Sieg is the only freshman that competed in the NCAA quarterfinals for both the singles and doubles bracket. She now finds her self just two wins away in both formats from an NCAA Championship.
